Have you ever visited a place suddenly felt as if you were transported into another dimension? That’s how I felt about Zhongxing New Village the moment I stepped foot there.
Zhongxing New Village is located in Nantou County and is completely government-owned. The roads here feel like an endless maze of green tunnels, and the wide roads and side walks makes it especially comfortable for a bike ride or an afternoon walk with friends. The landscape of this community was very well planned, with beautifully designed western-inspired buildings.
From the moment we got here, I hadn’t been able to stop marveling at the charm of this place. I kept telling myself that I wanted to move here, it’s so lovely it’s no wonder that it was once voted as ‘the most livable village in Taiwan’.
The quiet and secludedness of Zhongxing New Village felt extremely rejuvenating, and very different from the usual hustle and bustle that is Taiwan. No honking cars, no construction sites, just the sound of the wind and the sizzling summer heat. I felt like we were in our own little paradise.
It’s kinda silly- but it felt like that episode of SpongeBob where Squidward moves into a strange community isolated from the rest of the sea full of other Squidwards. He was so so happy, and that’s how I felt here.
Zhongxing New Village isn’t much of a big tourist attraction, there really isn’t much to do here. But if you’re looking for a tranquil afternoon of just walking around and immersing yourself in an old but very unique Taiwanese community, then this is exactly the place you’re looking for. There are many cafes that are quite popular around here as well- 55 bakery, Hilltea, and E92 Coffee, to name a few.
Another place to explore here is the Third Market where you can find many traditional Taiwanese stalls. The one that I was looking forward to the most was this ice cream sandwich shop, also the most popular shop here at Zhongxing New Village.
Their signature is their ice cream sandwich- it’s huge and comes in a variety of flavors. But what’s even better than the sandwiches are their super frosty iced plum drinks with a scoop of ice cream on top.
Trust me when i say it was one of the best things I’ve ever tasted, especially eaten in this scorching hot weather. I felt like I was going to heaven.
