If you have a passion for aesthetic restaurants, charming cafes, and a tranquil and rejuvenating environment, then you’ll love spending a weekend to explore the wonders of Calligraphy Greenway. Calligraphy Greenway spans a total of 3.6 kilometers, stretching from the National Museum of Natural Science in the north to the National Fine Arts Museum in the south.
As you meander along this picturesque route, you’ll encounter some truly captivating destinations, including: Citizen Square, Park Lane by CMP, and many many things to do, eat, and drink. If you’re in Taichung, then definitely head over to Calligraphy Greenway for a one day trip filled with fun and exciting activities.
Getting to Calligraphy Greenway
My favorite way to explore Calligraphy Greenway is by bike. The abundance of U-bikes scattered throughout the area definitely makes biking super accessible and convenient. What’s more, Calligraphy Greenway boasts a super bike-friendly environment that stands out in comparison to many other locations in Taichung.
However, if you’re not much of a biker or an outdoorsy person, fret not! The bus system in Taichung is also quite accessible and easy to understand. There are numerous buses in Taichung that’ll take you straight to Calligraphy Greenway, and once you’re there, all the destinations are within walking distance.
So whether you’re an outdoor adventurer or a little wallflower, Calligraphy Greenway will welcome you with open arms to explore its charm with plenty of options that’ll suit your preferred way of travel.
Best Things to Do at Calligraphy Greenway
Although Calligraphy Greenway stretches for an impressive 3.6 kilometers long, the locals usually refer to and focus on the vibrant area around Park Lane by CMP. This lively area is where this guide will be centered around, giving you an enjoyable and concentrated experience admist the heart of Calligraphy Greenway.
dine at the most aesthetic restaurants
In my personal opinion, Calligraphy Greenway is an absolute national treasure when it comes to beautiful dining establishments and cute dessert shops and bakeries. In my previous post, I’ve curated a list of some of the most unique restaurants in Calligraphy Greenway that are an absolutely must-go if you’re traveling here. From creative themed restaurants to fancy bars, Calligraphy Greenway is definitely a culinary adventure that even locals adore. At Calligraphy Greenway, there are plenty of opportunities to indulge yourself in the most delectable cuisines and beverages.
Read books at various bookstores
Calligraphy Greenway is a true haven for bookworms- you’ll find a variety of bookstores here to explore. Two of my favorite bookstores are the Eslite bookstore and the secondhand bookstore Molly. Whenever I visit Calligraphy Greenway, I can’t resist the temptation to walk into Molly and spend hours there searching for my next read.
While most of their books are in Mandarin, which is expected, these bookstores are still very much worth your time. There’s also a large section of a variety of English books to be discovered- and that’s more than enough for you to stay here digging for hours on end!
shenji new village
This former dormitory is located a few blocks away and is one of my absolute favorite places to visit in Taichung. This hidden gem offers cute markets and stands selling the most eclectic array of aesthetic items. The vibes here are a splendid blend of a little hippie, a dash of vintage, and a mix of everything cool. It’s a place that will keep you wanting to come back again and again.
I can personally vouch for its allure. I picked up fabulous pink hat here a few years ago and til this day, it still continues to be a beloved part of my wardrobe. Everything here holds an endearing charm and exudes a unique magnetism. Also, if you find yourself at Shenji New Village, don’t miss out on the chance to try Taichung’s best puffs- Luho puffs!
Enjoy the free concerts + shop along the park
Calligraphy Greenway truly comes alive once the sun starts to set, as it becomes a gathering spot for many talented uprising artists to perform for their crowds. Head over to the park with some friends and a lot of good food, enjoy the crisp evening air as you revel in the performances.
Many of these artists have been on local singing competitions or TV shows, all aspiring to share their gift with a greater audience. If you hear one that you like, be sure to give them some support and a follow! This is also the perfect time for a romantic evening stroll with your loved one while exploring cute items that the street vendors are selling.
sixth market
If you’ve traveled to Taichung before, you’ve likely already visted the second market, and maybe even the third market. Among these different local markets, the sixth market shines as a newer addition housed within a nicely air-conditioned space across from Kuang-San Sogo Mall.
Inside the sixth market, you’ll find an assortment of fresh produce and local snacks. While it may be smaller in size, it offers a refreshing break from the outside heat and the busy streets outside. I recommend coming here if you have extra time or if you need to cool down from being out for too long.
take some instagram photos at Park2 Caowu square
Park 2 is what I like to call “the oasis in the city center”. It is a recently built recreational center with many food stalls. You’ll see many people posing for instagram photos here, and although it is a bit of an overly touristy place, they have beautiful resting areas that’ll make you feel like you’re vacationing in Hawaii. If those are the vibes you’re looking for, definitely check Park 2 out while you’re at Calligraphy Greenway.
play with the puppies
Often times, you’ll see rescue organizations bring the rescued dogs and cats out to raise awareness and find potential adopters. Unfortunately, Taiwan does still have a very big problem with stray dogs, but it’s the warm hearted people in these organizations who give these dogs a brighter future. If you happen to see them during your trip to Calligraphy Greenway, you are mostly welcome to play with these dogs (unless stated on a sign otherwise) and feel free to make a small donation to help these organizations keep doing what they do!
have an afternoon picnic
Having always been a nature lover, I spent the longest time trying to find the perfect picnic spot after moving to Taichung. That is until I finally discovered the huge, inviting grass field at Calligraphy Greenway. Bring a picnic blanket, a good book, and some food here-and that. is all you need to create the perfect picnic experience here.
My favorite thing about this place is the delightful presence of playful dogs everywhere! There are so many dogs playing around here as well, it’s literally the most relaxing and healing place you could be. So if you’re in Taichung and ever looking for a picnic spot, this is the place for you.
If you’re in Taichung, don’t miss the opportunity to embark on a one-day adventure along Calligraphy Greenway! It will surely be a exciting day jam-packed with activities that will leave you with a happy heart and a full tummy.
Until next time,
