Christmas has always been my favorite holiday. From the shimmering lights hung all over the streets to the happy vibes radiating from every passerby, Christmas truly is the most wonderful time of the year.
Although Taiwan serves much different Christmas vibes from Europe, it is just as fantastic in its own unique way. Christmas trees of varying themes and colors stand outside of every shopping mall and train station, and crowds from all over Taiwan start to head up north to revel in the magic of the annual New Taipei Christmasland.
Curious as to what all the hype is about? Today I’ll be giving you the complete tour guide to the 2022 New Taipei Christmasland.
New Taipei Christmasland
Every year, Banqiao (in New Taipei city) hosts the largest month-long Christmas event in Taiwan called Christmasland (新北耶誕城). Here, you’ll find many Christmas related events such as Christmas markets and carnivals. There are also many “not so traditional” Christmas themed decorations perfect for taking some fun photos that you can look back on. Different themes are presented at Christmasland each year, and for the year of 2022, they have decided on Frozen.
There are different event programs every weekend, such as Christmas markets, concerts inviting some Taiwanese artists, flea markets, and so on. Make sure not to miss the Christmas markets because most of the stalls here sell Taiwanese food, which should be a very cool experience! You can check out the full schedule of Christmas events at their website here.
How to get there
If you’re coming from another city, the fastest way to get to Christmasland is straight by train to Banqiao train station. You can take the Tze-chiang limited express for a faster ride, which will also make a stop at the banqiao train station.
If you’re already in Taipei city, the easiest way to get there is to take the MRT to Banqiao station via the Bannan or blue line. At the Banqiao MRT station, you can take the second exit and Christmasland will be within five minutes away by walk.
Alternatively, you could also take buses. You can also check out all the bus stops and routes that will pass by Christmasland at their website.
Where to Live
There are many great budget friendly hostels in Taipei, but you definitely have to book them at least a month before your visiting dates. Especially if you’re going in a month like December or on the weekends.
please do not do what i did
I booked my accommodation just two days before traveling and you can probably guess, there were not many options for me to choose from. Luckily enough, I was able to get a really nice room at Water Meworld.
I booked a really cozy bunkbed room with a really nice soft, yellow lighting. The best thing about this hotel is the location- it is situated right across from the Taipei main station, so it is super convenient.
The downside to this room was that it was a little overpriced, at 3500NTD/night. The price for this hotel is usually nowhere near this expensive if you don’t book it last minute like I did. But for considering how convenient it is, I’d say its not too bad. I’m just really grateful we had a place to stay and didn’t end up having to sleep in the park 🙂 In all seriousness though, I definitely learnt my lesson this time, and will book my accommodation much earlier the next time I travel anywhere.
What to do at New Taipei Christmasland
Try to get the Christmas tree in one shot
Isn’t that always the goal? I’m still working on it though! It’s not easy getting the entire tree in one photo AND have the photo still look beautiful all at the same time.
Take a loooot of Christmas photos!
This was definitely my favorite part of the New Taipei Christmasland. There are so many adorable Christmas related decorations (and also many non-Christmas related ones as well…), perfect for taking some family photos.
Walk through the Christmas light tunnel
On the other side of Christmasland is a whole bridge decorated with Christmas lights. It looks quite unappealing from the outside, but once you enter the tunnel, you’ll feel like you’ve been transferred to a magical world where Christmas is all year round.
Absorb all the Christmas vibes in
Honestly, the crowds at Christmasland can get a bit overwhelming sometimes. It’s important to remind yourself to slow down amidst the crowd and to just take a deep breath and relish the cold, fresh air. You’re supposed to enjoy this time of the year! Go at your own pace, and be mindful as your soak in all the beauty Christmas has to offer 🤍
Where to Eat
My friends and I have been wanting to visit Fruitful food buffet (果然匯) for a while. Conveniently for us, it was in a mall right across Christmasland. They have super delicious vegetarian (and vegan) cuisine, and I recommend it to both vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. Click the link to read more about the restaurant!
